VMLY&R

Australian Defence Force Recruitment App

About

Agency: VMLY&R

Team: Myself, UX Designer, UX Design Lead

My Role: Junior UX Designer

Year: 2023

Tools: Miro, Figma

I was challenged to conceptualise some ideal state features for the ADF Careers Passport.

The Problem:

The current recruitment process for the Australian Defence Force is confusing for applicants and without streamlined user journeys, candidates are often left underprepared. What should provide a sense of opportunity and excitement instead prompts feelings of uncertainty and disconnection.

The Aim:

How might we develop a set of features for the Defence Force Recruitment app that brings excitement to applicants and equalises their opportunities and access to information?

01. Background

Project Background. VMLY&R was developing an app for the use of potential recruits. They had already set up a base set of features and functions based on their research.

I was tasked with coming up with my own ideas and pushing the possibilities for the app even further. My scope was very broad and simply had to remain somewhat realistic.

02. Research Synthesis

Customer Journey Insights. The UX team had already conducted extensive user research and mapped out a highly detailed customer journey map. From this they extracted various insights.

I synthesised this information further and boiled them down into three particular aims. This was with the intention of having a broader strategic direction to follow during my idea development stage.

03. Concepts

Concepts. After much brainstorming and ideating, 3 concepts were chosen to present back to the UX team.

As a result of feedback, concepts 2 and 3 were selected for further development.

04. Developed Concepts

Testimonials

Presenting to the team. I presented my ideas back to the team for feedback and was met with a highly positive response. I was able to bring a fresh perspective and simple but effective concepts to the table.

By this point in the project, I had already engaged in discussions with various UX experts across the team about my concepts and had received feedback throughout so I was encouraged to test my ideas further.

05. Next Steps & Learnings

Nitara's calm and articulate approach in the face of high-pressure tasks make her a clear thinker and standout presenter. Her insightful presentation on her approach to a Defence Force Recruitment project was impressive, made us look good, and ultimately influenced our broader digital strategy.

Jobs to be done theory. It was recommended that I test my concepts against Jobs to Be Done theory. I wrote out various statements following the theory for my two features.

For the future, I would write out these statements earlier in the process and test against them later on to ensure I was not being biased in constructing the statements based on my chosen solutions.
